Founded in 1983, the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals that had been used for documentary films about tropical rainforests. This non-profit, non-governmental zoo spans 29 acres and is home to more than 170 native animals.
During this informative Belize excursion you will receive an introduction to these magnificent animals and discover why it is critical to protect their natural habitats. From there you will make your way to Hattieville, a community born of displaced families following the aftermath of Hurricane Hattie in 1961. You will receive a brief safety meeting and overview of road rules then it's time to board a Jeep for a ride like no other!
During this Belize excursion, blaze over trails, through the pine savannah and lush forest as you ride to the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The merging of these distinct ecosystems provides you the opportunity to see a variety of plants and wildlife including more than 500 species of birds. Keep your eyes peeled for the Jabiru Stork, Yellow-headed Parrots, and the Keel-billed Toucan, the national bird of Belize. You might also get to see bats, jaguars, ocelots, and pumas.
